Synopsis

‘오래 쓰는 것’이 물건의 미덕인 시절이 있었다. 그리고 1920년대에 등장한 새로운 구호. “낡거나 닳지 않는 제품이야말로 비즈니스의 비극이다!” 이 선언 이후 등장한 모든 상품에는 수명이 생겼고, 제조업체들은 부러 고장이 나도록 설계한 제품을 생산하고 있다. 영화는 수명이 길고 오래 가는 전구는 대체 왜 시장에서 사라졌는지, 올이 풀리지 않는 스타킹은 어떻게 흔적도 없이 증발되었는지를 추적한다. 현대과학은 제품 내부에 수명을 심고, 그 수명이 다하기 전에 쓰레기장으로 보내도록 유도하고 있다. 이 모든 것이 그저 하나의 음모이론일 뿐일까? 이제 지구와 인류를 위해 소비자가 나설 때가 되었다!
Once upon a time…products were made to last. Then, in the 1920s, businessmen were struck by an insight, “A product that refuses to wear out is a tragedy of business!” Ever since then, manufacturers have been engineering their products to fail. This award winning film shows how long lasting light bulbs were suppressed by a secret carte and how ladder-proof stockings disappeared without trace. Modern electronics com equipped with inbuilt death-dates, sending them to the landfills before their time, But consumer have started rebelling, to save the planet and the economy.
